Lawmakers Should Realize that Their Jobs Are on the Line

Sunday, September 6, 2009
Many lawmakers heard from their constituents over the August break. Many of those constituents were not pleased with the Health Care Bill. Their vocal objections are hard to ignore, and shouldn't be ignored. Seeing that November 2010 elections are really not very far away, it would be foolish not to listen. The incumbents seats are no longer looking like a sure thing. Especially those who blatantly disregard the wishes of those in their district.

Recent polls show that only about 1/3 of Americans actually approve of the performance of the lawmakers representing them. This is not good. It's especially not good for democrats, because they are in power. The general rule is that, in times of discontent, the party in power gets hit harder than the party that is not, in terms of retaining lawmaker seats. Statements by lawmakers that they are going to go with their opinion regardless of the opinion of the district (Massa) or that they haven't read the bill (too many to mention) are huge red flags to voters.

No one should ever sign anything they haven't read. It's true for citizens, it's true for lawmakers. Read the fine print, find out the details. You can't claim ignorance if you sign. It is their job to read everything before they sign it. Countless lawmakers claimed that they had not read the stimulus bill, and countless lawmakers have also claimed that they haven't read the health care bill, citing the length, it's over 1,000 pages! Sorry, it's your job. You have to do it, or your job can and will be given to someone else.
